Jammu and Kashmir is in the grip of intense heatwave for the second week in a row as temperatures in Jammu plains crossed 44.7 degrees Celsius on Thursday.

This was so far the hottest temperature recorded in the UT this year. The MeT Office has predicted dry weather with intense heatwave conditions till next week.

The severe heatwave has created havoc in the Jammu plains, including Jammu city, Samba and Kathua, which are currently witnessing an unprecedented surge in maximum and minimum temperatures.

Samba town has recorded the highest temperature of 46.8 degrees Celsius as per the Automatic Weather Station of the IMD Centre, Srinagar.

The Centre has recorded a temperature of 44.7 degrees Celsius in Jammu, 40.2 degrees at Rajouri, 39.5 at Poonch, 42.2 degrees at Reasi, 41.9 degrees at Ramban, and 43.8 degrees at Kathua, while it is 33.8 degrees C at Kishtwar. 46.5 degrees C is the second-highest temperature, shown by the IMD Centre, Srinagar, for Mirpur city in PoJK on Wednesday.

The Met Office said that the Jammu division’s temperature was 5.9 degrees above normal this year, while several areas in the Kashmir division were also reeling under the immense heatwave.

The popular destinations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam were also witnessing above-normal temperatures at 24.0 degrees C and Pahalgam 28.8 degrees, and Kupwara 32.8, while Kokernag 32.9 is about 7 degrees above normal.

Unlike the plain areas in the rest of the country, except for the northeast, which has a similar weather pattern to Jammu and Kashmir.

The reading on the scale may not necessarily reflect the accurate on-ground temperatures, as dry air pushes temperatures further up, which means a 32-degree reading on the scale feels beyond 35-36 degrees.

Meanwhile, the MeT official said that up to June 14, the weather will remain hot and dry, while from June 14 late evening or early hours of June 15, the people will have some relief from the heat wave in Jammu and Kashmir.

He said the Monsoon is likely to hit Jammu and Kashmir during the last week of June, showing a slight change in the trend during the last two days.

He added that the pre-Monsoon showers may hit during the third week, but the full-fledged Monsoon has been showing a little delay now, by the end of June or the first week of July.
