In a significant step to acquaint the younger generation with the legacy of tribal icon and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) chief Shibu Soren, the state’s School Education and Literacy Department has approved the inclusion of his biography in school textbooks from the upcoming academic session.

Officials said lessons highlighting different phases of Soren’s life—from his humble beginnings to his political journey and struggles for tribal identity—will be gradually introduced from Class 1 to Class 12.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has already drawn up a plan to weave chapters on Soren into eight textbooks across subjects.

For students in Classes 1 and 2, his early life and values will be presented in the form of illustrated stories and simple narratives. By Class 4, children will learn about his environmental initiatives through poems and short stories.

At the middle school level, the curriculum will explore his anti-liquor campaign, promotion of local self-governance, and the pioneering night school Akhil Akhra that he started for educating tribal youth.

Senior classes will study Soren’s deeper involvement in mass movements, his parliamentary career, and his 19-point programme that outlined a vision for tribal welfare and social reform.

Soren’s biography will be featured in Hindi, English, and Urdu books from Class 9 onwards, extending to senior secondary classes with chapters on his political journey and community upliftment efforts.

Senior officials said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that students not only know about Soren’s contributions but also draw inspiration from his persistence, integrity, and commitment to social justice.

Welcoming the decision, JMM leaders termed it “historic,” saying it would help students understand how Soren’s leadership gave Jharkhand a distinct identity.
