SHO, ASI arrested in bribery case in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur

The arrest follows an investigation initiated after an online complaint was lodged with the chief minister's anti-corruption action line on Sunday.

An official spokesperson of the VB disclosed on Monday that the arrests followed an inquiry into an online complaint filed by a resident of Asalpur village in Hoshiarpur district on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line.

The Punjab Vigilance Bureau has arrested a station house officer and an assistant sub-inspector on charges of demanding a bribe of Rs 1.50 lakh from a man by threatening to implicate his son in a drugs case.

The arrest follows an investigation initiated after an online complaint was lodged with the chief minister's anti-corruption action line on Sunday.

Sub-Inspector Raman Kumar, posted as the station house officer (SHO) at Bulowal police station, and Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Gurdeep Singh were taken into custody following the probe. The complainant, a resident of Asalpur village in Hoshiarpur district, alleged that an FIR had been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against his nephew.

He claimed that the accused officers threatened to implicate his son in the same case unless he paid the bribe. Initially, ASI Gurdeep Singh demanded Rs 1.50 lakh on behalf of SHO Raman Kumar, but after negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 1 lakh.

As evidence, the complainant secretly recorded conversations with the officers and submitted the audio recordings to the Vigilance Bureau. After verifying the complaint, a case was registered against the accused under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in the Jalandhar Range.

Both officers were arrested and are set to be produced before the competent court on Tuesday. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harpreet Singh Mander of the Vigilance Bureau, Jalandhar Range, confirmed that further investigations are ongoing.
