The Bengaluru police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a “comprehensive and meticulous” probe into the death of real estate tycoon CJ Roy, chairman of the Confident Group, who was found dead at his office during Income Tax Department searches, officials said on Saturday.
Roy (57), also the honorary consul of the Slovak Republic, allegedly died by suicide on Friday at his firm’s office on Langford Road. Police said he was found with a gunshot wound from his licensed firearm.
Bengaluru Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh said the SIT will be headed by Joint Commissioner of Police (West Zone) C. Vamshi Krishna, with Deputy Commissioner of Police (South Division) Lokesh Jagalasar designated as the investigating officer. The team has been authorised to induct additional officers and resources as required.
According to police, Roy had gone to the office to provide a statement to Income Tax officials who were conducting searches linked to his company. A statement given by T.A. Joseph, managing director of the Confident Group, said Roy entered his cabin and locked the door, telling staff he needed to speak with his mother. When there was no response, staff broke open the door and found him unresponsive. An ambulance was called, but medical personnel declared him dead on arrival at hospital.

Roy’s brother, Babu Roy, alleged that pressure from tax proceedings may have contributed to the incident. He told reporters that searches were conducted at the company’s premises in December 2025 and that tax officials again visited the office on January 29, asking Roy to be present the following day.
“My brother repeatedly told me that the pressure from the Income Tax department was too much. He had no debts or financial problems,” Babu Roy said.
Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara said a preliminary inquiry had begun and further action would be based on the findings. He added that allegations of harassment linked to tax searches had not yet been examined.
The Ashok Nagar police station has registered an Unnatural Death Report, and the case is being treated as a prima facie suicide.
