Higher reaches of Kashmir experienced fresh snowfall while rain lashed the other parts, including the plains on Saturday, disrupting normal life across the valley, officials said.
Overnight snowfall was reported in areas like Tulail and Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district, as well as Sinthan Top in the south. Due to moderate accumulation, the Gurez-Bandipora Road has been closed to vehicular traffic.
The authorities have also ordered the suspension of school up to Class 8 in Tulail and up to Class 5 in Gurez amid continuing snowfall and bad weather conditions.
Other higher-altitude regions, including Zoji La on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway and the Mughal Road — an alternate route connecting the Valley to Jammu — also received fresh snowfall. Traffic movement on both routes has been suspended, the officials added.
Widespread rainfall was recorded across the valley, including in Srinagar, with thunderstorms and gusty winds hitting many areas overnight. Hailstorms in some parts also damaged orchards, causing concern among farmers.
The Meteorological Department forecast light to moderate rain or snow across most areas, with chances of moderate to heavy precipitation in isolated locations until Sunday evening. Thunderstorms and gusty winds are also expected to persist.
Cloudy skies with scattered rain and thunderstorms may continue into Monday, the Met office added. Farmers have been advised to halt agricultural activities till Monday, while travelers have been warned about possible landslides, mudslides, and shooting stones in vulnerable areas.
