Snowfall in Himachal’s higher reaches, rain in many areas

The higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh experienced fresh snowfall, while moderate rainfall lashed several parts of the state, the Shimla Meteorological Office reported on Sunday. The wet spell is expected to persist across the hill state until Friday, except for Tuesday, when a brief dry period is anticipated.


Since Saturday evening, various regions have witnessed snowfall. Manali’s Kothi recorded the highest snowfall at 27.5 cm, followed by Khadrala in Shimla at 5 cm, Kalpa in Kinnaur at 4 cm, and Sangla at 3.4 cm. In the Lahaul and Spiti district, Gondla received 15 cm of snow, Kukumseri recorded 4.8 cm, and Keylong measured 4 cm.


Several areas also reported thunderstorms, with Shimla, Jubbarhatti, Kangra, Sundernagar, and Bhuntar in Kullu experiencing stormy conditions. Parts of Mandi district witnessed shallow fog, reducing visibility to approximately 800 meters.


Many regions received heavy rainfall, with Manali recording 66 mm, followed by Bhuntar at 46.6 mm, Kasol at 44 mm, Seobagh at 42 mm, Gohar at 36 mm, and Kothi at 34 mm. Other areas that saw substantial rainfall include Baggi (32.1 mm), Katula (30.3 mm), Pandoh and Rohru (30 mm each), and Bijahi (26.2 mm).

Ghagas in Bilaspur received 25.6 mm of rain, Sundernagar recorded 26.2 mm, Pooh saw 22.8 mm, and Jubbal measured 21.4 mm. Additional rainfall was reported in Mandi (18.4 mm), Jogindernagar (18 mm), Shillaro (17 mm), Slapper (16.5 mm), Baldwara (16 mm), and Kufri (15 mm).


The Meteorological Office has forecasted light to moderate rain in some areas on Sunday, with isolated showers likely in Lahaul-Spiti and Kinnaur. 


Higher reaches of Chamba, Kangra, and Kullu are also expected to receive precipitation between March 17 and 21, except on March 18, when the weather is predicted to remain dry. A fresh, feeble Western Disturbance is anticipated to impact the Western Himalayan region from March 19 onward.


Regarding temperatures, Keylong recorded the lowest minimum temperature at minus 2 degrees Celsius, while Dhaulakuan in Sirmaur district was the warmest location during the day, with a maximum temperature of 28.3 degrees Celsius.


Between March 1 and 16, Himachal Pradesh recorded 73.2 mm of rainfall, surpassing the normal average of 60.7 mm for this period, marking an excess of 21 percent.
