Ahead of the Ludhiana West Assembly bypoll, Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Wednesday alleged that certain police officials were acting as “workers of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)” and attempting to intimidate Congress supporters.
Ashu claimed that a Congress worker had called the police after witnessing an AAP volunteer allegedly distributing ration in the constituency. However, instead of taking action against the alleged violator, the police reportedly tried to arrest the Congress worker who raised the alarm.
Accusing the police of partiality, Ashu said, “The Congress will not tolerate this. You cannot escape the law of the land, and we will hold you accountable.”
He further stated that while he appreciated the neutrality maintained by many in the police and administration, “a few black sheep are trying to act more loyal than the king and are tarnishing the department’s image.”
The senior Congress leader announced that every polling booth would be closely monitored by the public during voting on June 19. “I have urged people to record and share videos of any irregularities they observe,” he added.
Ashu expressed confidence in his party’s victory and advised police officials not to “waste their efforts” by allegedly harassing Congress workers.
Polling for the Ludhiana West bypoll is scheduled from 7 am to 6 pm on June 19, with counting set to take place on June 23. The seat fell vacant following the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January.
