Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday said the state government's campaign against drug abuse, especially the growing menace of chitta, has now turned into a people's movement.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the Shimla Cricket Carnival held under the theme "Say No to Drugs, Embrace Sports", the chief minister said public participation from all sections of society has given a major boost to awareness efforts against drug addiction.

He said the government organised volleyball and cricket tournaments during the recently concluded International Shimla Summer Festival to encourage young people to engage in sports and stay away from substance abuse.

Sukhu said sports help instill discipline, confidence and healthy habits among youth. They also provide a positive outlet for energy and reduce the risk of falling into harmful addictions.

Reaffirming the government's resolve to make Himachal drug-free, he announced that seminars and walkathons highlighting the dangers of drug abuse would be organised in colleges across the state.

He said senior district officials have been directed to visit schools regularly and educate students about the harmful effects of addiction and substance abuse.

The chief minister added that police, social organisations, panchayats, teachers, parents and young people are working together to strengthen the fight against drugs across Himachal Pradesh. He said the government is not only taking action against drug peddlers but is also targeting the financial networks and support systems that sustain the illegal trade.

Sukhu said illegal assets worth nearly Rs 51 crore have been confiscated over the last three-and-a-half years, while strict action has been taken against several drug traffickers and organised drug networks.

The chief minister also announced financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh for organising the tournament and declared a 50 per cent concession in cricket ground usage fees.
