An intense cold wave returns to Kashmir on Monday as the minimum temperatures plummet several degrees below the freezing point while warm weather conditions continue in the plains of the Jammu division.
The Metrological Centre (MeT) officials said that the minimum temperature was minus 5.5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar city, while popular tourist destination Gulmarg recorded minus 5.2 and another tourist destination Pahalgam recorded minus 6.4 degrees Celsius.
Jammu City, on the other hand, witnessed pleasant weather conditions as the minimum temperature recorded hovered above 5.8 degrees Celsius, Mata Vaishno Devi shrine base camp town Katra had 8.2, Batote 4.7, Banihal 1.5 and Bhaderwah 1.4 degrees Celsius.
The cold weather conditions disrupted morning routines as roads and water pipes were all frozen as a result of prevailing freezing conditions across Kashmir Valley.
Meanwhile, the MeT has predicted the dry weather conditions to continue till 28 January, with chances of rainfall from 28 to 31 January.
The valley is currently under the grip of a 40-day harsh winter period known as Chillai Kalan, which started on December 21 and will end on January 30.
The weather starts improving gradually from February 1 in the valley, although snowfall usually occurs till the beginning of March, even in the plains of Kashmir Valley. Weather has already improved in Jammu, where the maximum temperature was 21.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
