Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal strongly criticised the murder of Jarnail Singh, the sarpanch of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district. Attacking the AAP-led Punjab government, Sukhbir said the government has failed to maintain law and order in the state.
Badal said Jarnail Singh was shot dead during a wedding function in Amritsar on Sunday. In a post on X, Badal said he strongly condemns the cold-blooded murder of Sarpanch Jarnail Singh of Valtoha village, Tarn Taran, who was shot dead at a wedding function in Amritsar.
He said the incident reveals a disturbing pattern, recalling that a young man was shot dead in Bhinder Kalan in Moga yesterday, while a woman was killed in Kapurthala on Friday. He said targeted killings in public places have become routine and blamed the complete failure of policing under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, who also holds the Home portfolio. Badal said the Chief Minister must be held accountable for the breakdown of law and order.
The killing has raised serious concerns about public safety and the effectiveness of law enforcement in the state. It has also triggered fresh political attacks on the Aam Aadmi Party-led state government.
Earlier, a case of daylight firing involving an AAP Sarpanch was reported in Amritsar. During a wedding event at the Marigold Resort, unidentified persons shot and killed the Sarpanch, police said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Jagjit Singh Walia said the deceased was identified as Jarnail Singh, a resident of Valtoha village in Tarn Taran district. He said Singh was affiliated with the Aam Aadmi Party and was currently serving as the village Sarpanch.
DCP Walia said This evening, at the Marigold Resort here on the Amritsar bypass, we received information that a shooting had occurred. All our senior officers and teams immediately rushed to the spot... Someone shot a person named Jarnail Singh. Our team is fully engaged in investigating this incident.

According to the DCP, Jarnail Singh had come to Amritsar to attend a wedding event. During the event, two unidentified attackers opened fire on him. He was shot twice in the head and died on the spot.
Police reached the scene soon after receiving information and began the probe. CCTV footage from the resort is being examined to help identify the attackers.
Speaking to the media at the spot, DCP Walia said the police had received information about firing inside a resort. On reaching there, they found that the Sarpanch had been shot twice and had died on the spot. He said the case is under investigation and the attackers will be detained soon.
The DCP also said the Tarn Taran police may have information on whether the deceased had received any threats or ransom calls earlier. He added that the Amritsar police have not yet received any information in this regard. More details are awaited.
