Narain Singh Chaura, the man accused of attempting to assassinate Sukhbir Singh Badal, has had his judicial remand extended for three more days, until December 11. Chaura had fired at the Akali Dal leader while he was at the Golden Temple in Amritsar, performing religious penance.
Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was in a wheelchair at the time, managed to avoid the attack with the help of his security personnel. They quickly intervened, grabbing the shooter's hands, while the bullet hit the walls of the premises.
Chaura was brought before an Amritsar court, where the police requested a 10-day custody. However, the court granted only three days of police remand. He was previously sent to a three-day police custody on Thursday, which would last until December 8.
As part of the ongoing investigation into the assassination attempt, the police are also looking into the role of Chaura’s sons, Jagjit Singh and Baljinder Singh. Both were summoned for questioning on Saturday.
Authorities are not only investigating how Chaurra obtained the weapons used in the attack, but are also reviewing his past criminal cases for further clues.
