The prime accused in the sensational killing of a municipal officer in Bihar was shot dead in a police encounter on Wednesday morning, a day after the attack. The deceased, identified as Ramdheen Yadav, was accused of gunning down the Executive Officer (EO) of the Sultanganj Nagar Parishad in Bhagalpur.
According to Bhagalpur SSP Pramod Kumar, the accused had surrendered at a police station following the murder and was being interrogated regarding the weapon used in the crime. During questioning, Yadav reportedly confessed to having hidden the firearm in a rural location. Acting on this information, a police team took him along to recover the weapon.
Police said that during the raid, a group of unidentified accomplices began chasing the team and opened fire. Amid the chaos, Yadav allegedly attempted to take advantage of the situation and also fired at the police, leading to injuries to three personnel, including DSP Naveen Kumar.
The police said that they retaliated in self-defence, leading to an exchange of fire. During the encounter, Yadav sustained a bullet injury to the chest and collapsed. He, along with the injured officers, was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The injured police personnel are currently undergoing treatment.
During the operation, two other accused persons were also arrested. “The accused was being taken for recovery of the weapon when unidentified criminals opened fire. Police retaliated in self-defence. Yadav was injured and later succumbed. Three police personnel were also injured. The matter is under investigation,” Kumar said.
The encounter comes a day after a brazen attack at the Sultanganj Nagar Parishad office on Tuesday. Armed assailants had stormed the premises and opened fire, critically injuring EO Krishna Bhushan Kumar and chairman Rajkumar Guddu. Both were rushed to the Sultanganj Referral Hospital and later referred to Mayaganj hospital, where Kumar succumbed to his injuries during transit. The chairman remains under treatment.
