The Jharkhali Tiger Rehabilitation Centre, which had fallen silent following the death of the elderly tiger Sohan last month, has welcomed a new resident. Late on Friday night, a tigress aged around ten arrived from the Alipore Zoo, bringing renewed life to the once-vacant enclosure.
According to officials from the South 24 Parganas forest department, the tigress has her origins in the Sundarbans. “She was rescued from the dense Sundarbans forest a few years ago and was then moved to the Alipur Zoo for treatment and long-term care. Now, after years of recovery, she has returned to her natural habitat—a heartfelt homecoming to the serene surroundings of Jharkhali,” said a forest department official.
At present, the tigress is housed in a small enclosure under close observation by veterinary staff and forest personnel. Officials are monitoring her closely—tracking her response to the new surroundings, appetite and stress levels.
Thus far, doctors have reported that her condition is stable and she appears to be in good health.
“If her condition remains positive, she will soon be moved to a larger enclosure. Jharkhali is already home to two other tigers—Sohini and Sundar—and with this new arrival, the tiger family at the centre grows stronger,” the officer added.
Visitors, however, will have to wait to catch a glimpse of the latest feline resident. The tigress will only be shifted to the larger enclosure and made visible to the public once medical officials give their go-ahead.
Forest officials also confirmed that a name for the tigress is yet to be finalised and will be decided upon shortly.
