A 24-year-old youth arrested earlier this week in Haryana’s Panipat for allegedly leaking sensitive information to some individuals in Pakistan was also in contact with a handler from Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), police sources revealed on Thursday.
The accused, Nauman Ilahi, a resident of Kairana in Uttar Pradesh, was nabbed on Tuesday. His arrest came in the midst of heightened security in the state following last month’s terror attack in Pahalgam and the subsequent military standoff between India and Pakistan.
Employed as a security guard at a local factory, Ilahi was allegedly passing confidential information to Pakistan. His connections to an ISI handler have further raised concerns.
Ilahi had been living in Hali Colony, Panipat, with his sister Zeenat and brother-in-law Irfan. While Irfan said Ilahi mostly stayed at his workplace or visited his hometown, Zeenat expressed a firm stance. “If he has been involved in such activities, he must face strict punishment,” she said.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to cease all firing and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect following four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes that brought the two countries to the brink of full-scale war.
Ilahi, who studied up to Class 10, is currently in police custody for further investigation.
