The Haryana Police on Tuesday arrested a 24-year-old man in Panipat district on suspicion of espionage, alleging he was supplying sensitive information to some individuals in Pakistan.
The accused, identified as Nauman Ilahi, is a resident of Kairana in Uttar Pradesh and had been employed as a private security guard in the area, the police said on Wednesday.
"Ilahi was in contact with some people in Pakistan and was supplying sensitive information to them," said Karnal SP Ganga Ram Punia, who currently holds additional charge as Panipat SP.
When questioned about Ilahi's specific contacts across the border, Punia said the matter remains under investigation. “These things are part of investigations. We have seized his mobile phone, and further investigation is ongoing,” he added.
India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to cease all firing and military actions on land, air and sea with immediate effect following four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes that brought the two countries to the brink of full-scale war.
Ilahi’s arrest follows another recent case in neighbouring Punjab, where the Punjab Police apprehended two individuals, including a woman, for alleged espionage activities reportedly linked to a Pakistani official at the High Commission in New Delhi.
Investigations into both cases are ongoing.
