Bharatiya Janata Party senior leader Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday dropped in at the house of the raped-murdered RG Kar hospital medic and declared a 'Nabanna Abhijan' (march to the state secretariat) on August 9, seeking justice for the victim. In the company of the victim's tearful parents at their Sodepur home in North 24 Parganas, Adhikari said the rally would be a people's movement, and not political.

"There will be no party colours. No party flags. But only plain people, who are perturbed about the deteriorating security situation in the state and women's insecurity, will participate in the march which will proceed towards Nabanna" he said.

August 9 is the first anniversary of the heinous rape-murder of the 31-year-old physician and also the 83rd anniversary of the Quit India Movement, he added.

"Thousands will participate in the march across party lines. Her parents will take the lead as we demand justice for our sister, who was killed within a government hospital," Adhikari said.

In a statement to the press, the victim's father averred: "It will be one year since we lost our daughter. I call the people to come out to the rally — like last year's 'Raat Jaago' protest — and walk up to Nabanna. People must be shown the real face of this state government."

Earlier, while addressing supporters in front of the South Calcutta Law College, where a first-year student was allegedly gang-raped, Adhikari claimed, “The RG Kar victim had shed blood from her eyes, not tears. The current ruling dispensation offers protection to rapists and torturers, that’s why they must go. I will visit the victim’s parents soon and seek their blessings for organising this march to Nabanna on her death anniversary, which we will hold without party flags.”
