Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Suvendu Adhikari on Monday urged the state government to stand by candidates who had qualified in the School Service Commission (SSC) examinations, describing the issue as a matter of justice rather than politics.
Speaking in the Assembly, Adhikari said that if the government brought a bill to recognise SSC qualified candidates, the opposition would unanimously support it. “Standing by SSC qualified candidates is not a political issue, it is a question of justice. If the government brings a bill, we are ready to support it,” he stated.
Adhikari further noted that if such a bill were passed unanimously, it would be considered a strong appeal before the Supreme Court on behalf of the state government. He also called for immediate and effective steps from the administration to address the plight of job seekers.
The remarks come in the wake of the Supreme Court’s directive in the SSC 26,000 Job Cancel case, which ordered the publication of the list of ineligible candidates within seven days. In compliance, the SSC published a list of 1,804 candidates on Saturday, followed by a late-night addition of two more names, taking the total to 1,806. The list includes several Trinamool Congress councillors, local leaders and close associates of MLAs.
Amid this, SSC qualified candidates who lost their jobs continue to voice their frustration. “Why should we pay for someone else’s mistake? What is our crime? We did not commit corruption. Despite being on the eligible list, we are not getting jobs,” they said, demanding that the government submit the list of ineligible candidates to the court and take immediate steps to reinstate those who had legitimately qualified.
Echoing their concerns, Adhikari reiterated that restoring jobs to qualified candidates must be a top priority for the state.
