Three female students at Visva Bharati University have filed a formal complaint against a guest professor, alleging sexual harassment and misconduct.
The students, who are enrolled in the Persian, Urdu, and Islamic Studies departments, accuse the professor of soliciting sexual favours in exchange for passing them in their semester exams.
In their complaint, the students claim that the professor sent them lewd messages via WhatsApp individually and made inappropriate physical advances.
They also allege that the professor offered to assist them with their exams if they agreed to his demands.
A spokesperson for Visva Bharati University stated that if the students choose to approach the internal complaints committee (ICC), the university will investigate the matter thoroughly and take appropriate action.
The complaint was officially lodged at the Santiniketan police station on March 28 and has been documented in the court of ACJM, Bolpur.
The police have confirmed that investigations into the allegations are underway.
The accused professor has vehemently denied the charges, asserting that he has never faced such accusations in the past and believes he is being falsely implicated.
“I have been teaching here so long. Never have such allegations levelled against me in the past,” he added.
Sudipta Bhattacharya, spokesperson for the Visva Bharati University Faculty Association, emphasised the importance of promptly conducting a thorough inquiry into the allegations.
