Following the heavy rainfall in the hill state of Himachal Pradesh, the water level in the Tangri River has risen, which flows through the Ambala Cantonment, and could touch the danger mark if it continues to increase, officials said.
Energy and Transport Minister Anil Vij, who is also the local MLA, on Friday took stock of the situation and asked the district administration to remain alert.
Speaking on the situation, Vij said, "We have worked to clean the Tangri River, and we hope there will be no danger as water will recede, but as a precautionary measure, we have directed the administration. We have also called the NDRF."
The district administration is on an alert mode as the water level in some other rivers passing through Ambala is also on the rise, they said.
Some schools located close to the Tangri River have been shut, officials said.
The irrigation department has expressed apprehension of a further rise in the water level in the Tangri River. A large number of people living near the river have been advised to move to safer places, the officials said. In 2023, Ambala was one of Haryana's worst-hit districts by floods.
