As IMD predicted next two days crucial on consistent inclement weather conditions, authorities sounded an alert on Tuesday morning after the Tawi river in Udhampur surged past the evacuation mark, posing a severe flood risk to low-lying areas in Jammu.
Early this morning, the water level at Udhampur was recorded at 24.975 feet, significantly above the evacuation level of 23.4 feet.
Officials said the situation turned alarming as the river had already breached the danger mark of 20 feet and continued to rise rapidly beyond safe limits. The alert level is 15 feet, indicating that the current flow has crossed all thresholds.
In Jammu, the Tawi is currently flowing below the alert level, but authorities cautioned that a sharp rise is expected in the coming hours. Forecasts suggest that the river may soon cross the flood alarm and danger levels, potentially triggering evacuation measures in vulnerable areas along its banks.District administrations have been advised to remain on high alert, with rescue teams and disaster management units placed on standby.
Residents living close to the river have been urged to move to safer locations and follow official advisories closely.Continuous rainfall across Jammu and Kashmir has led to a sharp rise in water levels of several rivers and streams, triggering flash floods in parts of Jammu region. The Meteorological Department (MET) has issued an advisory on the matter.“Possibility of intense or heavy to very heavy Rain, thunder at scattered places and extremely heavy rain at isolated places of Jammu Division and moderate to heavy rain in South Kashmir during August 26, Tuesday. Cloud burst and flash floods at few vulnerable places with landslides,mudslides, shooting stones may occur and therefore people have been asked to stay away from water bodies,nallas,river embankments,loose structures etc.
Waterlogging and flooding in the low-lying areas of Jammu Division have already been reported from parts of Jammu causing enormous hardships to the residents who are battering with the conditions. All concerned are advised to stay alert and updated,” the advisory read.A bridge over the Sahar Khad river near the Jammu-Pathankot Highway in Jammu and Kashmir’s (J-K) Kathua has been damaged after the river began flowing in spate due to continuous rains in the region. The incident has disrupted traffic on the highway, a key arterial route. Local administration teams are monitoring the situation closely. The Jammu region has been experiencing intense monsoon showers for the past few days, causing rivers to swell, triggering landslides, and disrupting normal life in low-lying and hilly areas.
