Tech-infused security tightens grip on Kashmir highway

In a bid to curtail militant activities and the flow of arms, security forces have intensified surveillance along NH44. Coordinated army-police patrols, surprise checkpoints, and AI-powered scanners are transforming the highway into a fortified corridor against anti-national threats.

The Indian Army, in close coordination with the Jammu and Kashmir Police, has intensified surveillance and deployment along National Highway 44 (NH44), which connects Jammu to the Valley, in a concerted effort to intercept militant movements and disrupt the flow of arms, ammunition, and contraband through the critical route.

Mobile Vehicle Checkpoints (MVCs) have been established at key junctions, with units conducting surprise inspections across multiple locations. These dynamic checkpoints are part of a wider strategy to increase operational unpredictability and neutralise potential threats before they manifest.

To bolster these efforts, advanced surveillance systems including AI-based Facial Recognition and Identification tools, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems, and sophisticated vehicle scanners have been deployed at major entry and exit points along the highway.

Day and night patrolling has also been scaled up, with army units closely monitoring vulnerable stretches and strategic choke points. Officials stated that this multi-layered security apparatus has already yielded tangible results in recent weeks, with several suspicious activities detected and thwarted before escalation.

“The enhanced presence and technology infusion have created a strong deterrent effect, making it increasingly difficult for anti-national elements to exploit NH-44 for their operations,” said a senior security official.

The infusion of cutting-edge technology is seen as a significant step forward in border security management. This development comes just days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah remarked that “technology is going to be the new guardian of the country’s borders with Pakistan.”

While digital surveillance plays a crucial role, officials maintain that technology alone is insufficient. “While including technology has become increasingly important for overall security apparatus, this, however, has certain limitations that can be addressed only through human resources,” a senior officer pointed out.

The army’s heightened vigilance and integration of AI-driven monitoring are aimed at preventing militants from using NH44 as a corridor for movement between the Jammu and Kashmir regions, particularly in light of recent cross-border infiltration attempts.
