Theog-Hatkoti route hit by landslide

A landslide blocked the Theog-Hatkoti road near Chela in Shimla on Sunday. The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Shimla, said restoration work on NH-705 was currently underway.

 

The ongoing monsoon season has brought heavy damage across Himachal Pradesh. According to a cumulative loss report from the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) under the Revenue Department, between June 20 and September 6, the state has reported 366 deaths and major destruction of public and private property.

 

Out of these 366 deaths, 203 were due to rain-related incidents and 163 due to road accidents.

 

The rain-related incidents included 42 deaths from landslides, 34 from drowning, 9 from flash floods, 17 from cloudbursts, 40 from falls from trees or steep rocks, 15 from electrocution, 28 from other causes, 3 from fire, and 15 from snake bites. No deaths were reported from lightning or avalanches.

 

District-wise, Mandi recorded the highest number of rain-related deaths at 37, followed by Kangra (31), Kullu (25), Chamba (21), Shimla (21), Kinnaur (14), Hamirpur (13), Bilaspur (11), Una (10), Sirmaur (7), Solan (7), and Lahaul & Spiti (6).

 

In terms of road accidents, 163 people lost their lives. Chamba and Mandi had the highest toll with 22 each, followed by Kangra (19), Solan (19), Shimla (18), Kinnaur (14), Kullu (13), Una (12), Sirmaur (11), Bilaspur (7), Hamirpur (3), and Lahaul & Spiti (3).

 

There has been massive financial loss too. The SEOC report estimates total losses at Rs 4,07,906.90 lakhs. Of this, public property damage accounts for Rs 4,00,006.50 lakhs, while private property damage is worth Rs 6,700.405 lakhs.

 

The monsoon further damaged 3,390 houses and 40 huts partially, while 692 pucca houses and 83 kuccha houses were completely destroyed. Livestock losses were also high, with 1,464 animal deaths and 26,955 poultry deaths reported.
