Trinamool Congress (TMC) has suffered yet another setback in the Rajya Sabha, as party MP Prakash Chik Baraik resigned from his seat on Thursday, marking the third resignation from the party’s parliamentary ranks this week. Earlier, senior leaders Sukhendu Sekhar Roy and Susmita Dev had stepped down from the Upper House. With Baraik’s sudden exit, the number of TMC MPs in the Rajya Sabha has now dropped to 10.
Baraik submitted his resignation to Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan at around 11:00 am. However, neither the party nor the MP has issued an official statement explaining the reason behind the move.
Considered a prominent face among the younger generation of TMC leaders, Baraik was known to be a close associate of the party’s General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 2023 and later contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Alipurduar as the party’s candidate, though he was unsuccessful.
The TMC leadership had been projecting Baraik as a key figure to strengthen the party’s organisational base in North Bengal. There had also been speculation within party circles about his potential candidature in the upcoming Assembly elections, although that did not materialise.
His sudden resignation has triggered intense speculation within political circles. While various theories are being discussed, no concrete information has yet emerged regarding the reasons behind his decision.
Observers say the development comes at a time of heightened political turbulence within the party, and the back-to-back resignations have raised questions about internal dynamics. Whether Baraik’s move signals a larger political shift or remains an isolated decision is yet to be determined.
For now, the silence from both the leader and the party leadership has only deepened the mystery, leaving political observers awaiting further clarity in the days ahead.
