Several schools and government offices in Chandigarh and Jalandhar received bomb threat emails on Monday, triggering panic among residents and prompting search operations, officials said.
Police teams reached the school and office premises at both locations and carried out searches.
“After we received the information, we reached the school premises. A thorough check is underway, but so far nothing suspicious has been found. We have urged the parents that there is no need to panic,” a police official present at one of the schools informed reporters here.
Besides schools, another email threatened Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, DGP Gaurav Yadav, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. Additional threats were also made to the court complex in Ferozepur and a statue of Dr Bhimrao Ambedkar in Amritsar.
However, authorities decided to keep schools open despite the threats. In Jalandhar, schools remained functional, and students and staff remained inside while police continued their search operations. Bomb disposal squads and dog squads carried out searches.
The email warned of bomb blasts in schools in Jalandhar and urged parents to save their children. It also claimed that Punjab would become Khalistan and included slogans such as “Start Deh Shiva Bar Mohe” and “Stop Jan Gan Man”. The email further stated that bomb and grenade attacks were aimed at targeting specific schools around 1:11 pm and the Mayor’s office at 2:11 pm.
This comes days after a grenade explosion near the Punjab BJP office, after which police and the NIA uncovered alleged interstate terror links involving Punjab-origin terror outfits with J&K-based outfits. Investigators said the type of grenade used pointed to links with Poonch in Jammu and Kashmir.
Earlier, similar threat emails had been issued to several private and government schools in Chandigarh. While previous threat emails later turned out to be hoaxes, police authorities have maintained heightened vigilance and acted with caution in such cases, especially after the recent explosion.
