Three army personnel, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO), were injured on Sunday in a gunfight with militants in the remote Keshwan forest area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, officials reported.
The encounter erupted when joint search teams comprising the Army and J&K Police confronted a group of men displaying suspicious behaviour during combing operations, which were launched following the recent killing of two Village Defence Guards (VDGs) in the area.
Around 11 am, security forces tracked the militants hiding in the dense forests. “Encounter begins at Keswan-Kishtwar between terrorists and security forces.
Three or four terrorists believed to be trapped,” stated a police spokesperson.
Officials indicated that this militant group is likely the same one responsible for the brutal abduction and killing of two VDG members, Nazir Ahmad and Kuldeep Kumar, last Thursday.
Their bodies were recovered during a search operation and later handed over to their families.
The exchange of fire continues, and further updates are awaited.
