TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh on Wednesday moved Bankshal court with a defamation case against the father of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, who alleged that Ghosh “settled” the matter with the CBI after the state government paid the investigating agency.

The move comes days after Ghosh sent a legal notice to the victim’s father, warning him of legal action if he did not withdraw his remarks and issue an apology.

The parents of the victim have long expressed dissatisfaction with the investigation into their daughter’s rape and murder, alleging lapses by both the police and the CBI. During their recent protest march to Nabanna, they had openly raised questions about the role of the state government and demanded a “money-free” CBI investigation.

Recently, the grieving parents travelled to Delhi to meet the CBI director but returned disappointed. Following this, the victim’s father publicly remarked that the “CBI is bogus.”

Ghosh took exception to another allegation made by the victim’s father— that the state government had paid the CBI and Ghosh had “settled with the CGO.” In response, Ghosh issued a legal notice, stating that if an apology was not offered within four days, he would initiate legal proceedings.

CBI’s office is located at the Cengral Government Office (CGO) complex in Salt Lake.

With no apology forthcoming, Ghosh has now filed the case. Defending his stance, he had earlier written on social media: “They will say whatever they want, they will say whatever they are taught, it cannot happen. If they do not apologise, they will have to come to court and prove what they said.”

Ghosh maintained that he has respect and sympathy for the victim’s father but said unfounded allegations could not go unchallenged. “I have full respect and sympathy for the victim’s father. But no one will get away with making such demands or allegations,” he said.
