TMC MP urges supporters to use violence during Waqf protests

Trinamool MP Bapi Haldar’s threat to “gouge out eyes and break limbs” during a rally has drawn sharp criticism from the BJP, which termed it communal incitement. The comments, amid ongoing Waqf Act protests in Bengal’s Murshidabad district, have sparked a political firestorm. TMC has yet to respond.

Trinamool MP Bapi Haldar addressing a public gathering in Murshidabad, where he threatened violence and encouraged supporters to do the same amid Waqf Act protests, drawing sharp criticism from the BJP and civil society.

A video purportedly showing Trinamool Congress MP Bapi Haldar issuing a violent threat during a public rally in Murshidabad district has triggered a political storm in West Bengal. In the clip, which has since gone viral on social media, the MP is allegedly heard warning that he would “gouge out eyes and break limbs”.

The remarks, delivered against the backdrop of ongoing protests over the Waqf Amendment Act, have been widely condemned by opposition leaders, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has accused the Trinamool Congress (TMC) of encouraging communal incitement.

West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar shared the video on social media platform X, claiming that Haldar’s remarks were directed at innocent Hindu civilians. “The fanatical, fundamentalist jihadi groups who, under the pretence of protesting against the Waqf Amendment Act, are continuously attempting to erase the existence of Hindus and are even throwing petrol bombs. The MP is making it absolutely clear!” Majumdar said.

Describing Haldar’s speech as “terrifying”, Majumdar further criticised the Mamata Banerjee-led state government, accusing it of turning a blind eye to the rising tensions and shielding those inciting violence. “What action has the cowardly government taken against this individual? The responsibility for this barbarism lies squarely with the failed administration,” he added.

The protests over the amended Waqf Act have led to sporadic clashes in parts of Bengal, particularly in Murshidabad. Allegations of communal targeting and violence have heightened political tensions ahead of the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, there has been no official statement from either Bapi Haldar or the Trinamool Congress in response to the viral video. The party has so far refrained from commenting publicly on the matter, even as calls for disciplinary action mount.

The row comes days after BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari alleged that over 400 Hindus were forced to flee their homes in Murshidabad amid the violence sparked by the Waqf Act protests.

The incident has further intensified the political slugfest in the state, with BJP leaders demanding strict action and the ruling party maintaining silence, prompting questions about governance and law enforcement in communally sensitive areas.
