The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has announced Alifa Ahmed as its candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Kaliganj assembly constituency. Alifa is the daughter of late MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed, who had secured victory for the party in the 2021 assembly elections.
Nasiruddin Ahmed had been representing Kaliganj until his health deteriorated in February this year. He passed away while undergoing treatment at the age of 70, leaving the seat vacant. Since then, Kaliganj has remained without an MLA, prompting the need for a by-election.
The Election Commission of India announced on Sunday that the by-polls for Kaliganj in West Bengal will be held on June 19. Voting will also take place the same day in Nilambur (Kerala), Biswadar and Kandi (Gujarat), and Ludhiana West (Punjab).
On Monday, the Commission issued strict guidelines for the conduct of the elections. Officials including the district election officer, presiding officer, returning officer, sector officer and booth level officer have been instructed on maintaining security and preparing polling stations accordingly.
As per the rules, no political party is allowed to set up polling booths within 100 meters of any polling station. Additionally, all forms of government work, as well as campaign activities, are strictly prohibited within this radius on election day. Influencing voters, engaging in coercion or violating any election norms will lead to legal action and financial penalties.
Soon after the election schedule was declared, the TMC revealed its nominee — Alifa Ahmed — entrusting her to continue her father’s legacy in the Kaliganj constituency.
