A seaside holiday turned tragic in East Midnapore’s Mandarmani on Tuesday after three tourists were swept away by rough waves. One died, another remains missing, and the third is critically ill.
The incident occurred at the popular coastal destination in Purba Medinipur district. According to local sources, the three tourists—believed to be from Barasat in North 24 Parganas—entered the sea for a swim on Tuesday afternoon, reportedly ignoring warnings and clearly rough sea conditions.
Eyewitnesses said the tourists had ventured dangerously far into the water, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, when powerful waves dragged them away. Locals quickly raised the alarm and a rescue operation was launched by police and villagers using speedboats.

Two of the tourists were pulled out of the sea in an unconscious state and rushed to Barankuwa Rural Hospital. One was declared dead on arrival, while the other remains in a critical condition. The third tourist is still missing and a search operation is underway with the assistance of coastal police and rescue boats.
Sources at the Mandarmani coastal police station confirmed that the missing individual had not yet been located. “Our search is ongoing. All three tourists had reportedly ignored sea conditions and swam beyond the safe zone,” said a senior police official.
The accident caused panic among other beachgoers, many of whom watched the rescue efforts unfold in shock. Authorities suspect reckless behaviour and probable intoxication as contributing factors in the tragedy.
