Toxic gas emanating from the colliery area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) in Kenduadih (PB Area) of Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district has claimed yet another life, taking the death toll to three and triggering fear and anger among local residents.

The latest victim, identified as 46-year-old Surendra Kumar Singh, fell seriously ill on Monday night after coming under the impact of the poisonous gas. He was rushed to a hospital in an unconscious state by his family members, where doctors declared him dead. The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem report.

Earlier, two women had also lost their lives in the same locality due to the gas leak. Several other residents have complained of breathing difficulties, vomiting, headaches and eye irritation, and are undergoing treatment at different hospitals.

Locals allege that the problem of toxic gas leakage has persisted in the area for a long time but was never taken seriously by the authorities.

Following the incident, angry residents accused the BCCL management of ignoring safety norms. They said the poisonous gas leaking from the colliery area has made their daily lives unsafe.

Many affected families have demanded immediate relocation to safer places and adequate compensation.

The administration said relief and rescue operations are continuing. Surveillance has been intensified in the affected areas and residents have been advised to remain alert. An investigation is also underway to ascertain the causes of the gas leak.

Local residents have demanded strict action against the responsible officials and the BCCL management, stating that strong measures are necessary until a permanent solution to the problem is ensured.
