The order was disclosed to the Tripura High Court in an affidavit during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning school safety.

As of now, 484 private schools across Tripura have adhered to the directive of installing CCTV cameras, while 37 schools have reported financial difficulties but assured authorities that the work would be completed shortly.

In a significant move to enhance school safety, the Tripura government has directed all privately managed educational institutions in the state to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in key areas, including entrances, exits, hallways, classrooms and playgrounds. The directive aims to ensure student and staff security while improving institutional transparency.

The order was disclosed to the Tripura High Court in an affidavit during the hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning school safety. The PIL was filed by advocate Kundan Pandey and was heard by a division bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice Biswajit Palit. Senior Advocate Somik Deb appeared as Amicus Curiae, while Advocate General Shaktimoy Chakraborty and Pinki Chakraborty represented the state.

According to the education department, all private schools must complete the installation of CCTV systems within July. Failure to comply may result in severe penalties, including the revocation of school recognition.

So far, 484 private schools across Tripura have adhered to the directive, while 37 schools have reported financial difficulties but assured authorities that installation would be completed shortly.

The directive outlines specific requirements for the CCTV systems: cameras must offer adequate resolution, night vision capabilities and footage must be stored for at least 30 days. Technical guidelines have been issued to standardise installation and storage protocols across schools.

Education minister Ratan Lal Nath emphasised the importance of the initiative, saying, “The safety of our children is non-negotiable. This measure is not about surveillance, but about making schools secure and accountable environments for learning.”

The government has also clarified that the cost of installing CCTV systems must be borne by the respective institutions. After the 60-day deadline, inspection teams will begin visiting schools to ensure full compliance with the new safety norms.

This move is part of a broader effort by the Tripura government to modernise and strengthen the security infrastructure of educational institutions throughout the state.
