Tripura police have initiated an investigation into the death of Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, suspected to be a case of suicide, with authorities awaiting the post-mortem report to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Speaking to the media after paying his last respects at the Police Headquarters in Agartala, DGP-in-Charge G.S. Rao said that no Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted so far. He added that the matter would be reviewed and an appropriate panel may be formed to ensure a comprehensive probe and close monitoring of the case.
Describing the incident as “deeply unfortunate,” Rao said the entire police force was in shock over the sudden demise of the state’s top police official.
Police personnel gathered at the headquarters to pay tribute to Dhankar before his mortal remains were taken to the State Secretariat. Chief Minister Manik Saha, Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, and other dignitaries offered their respects.
The body was later transported to the airport for onward journey to Dhankar’s hometown in Uttar Pradesh, where his last rites are scheduled to be performed on Wednesday.
According to officials, a three-member police team accompanied the mortal remains to Uttar Pradesh. The team includes Inspector General (Law and Order) M. Ipper, Traffic Superintendent of Police Kanta Jangir, and the Commandant of the 2nd Battalion of the Tripura State Rifles.
Authorities said further details regarding the circumstances of Dhankar’s death are expected to emerge once the post-mortem findings are available and the investigation progresses.
