Two individuals were swept away by the rising waters of the Parvati River near Kasol in Himachal Pradesh’s Kullu district on Thursday, officials said.

The incident occurred in the Manikaran Valley during the afternoon, when the river’s flow suddenly increased. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the two individuals being carried away by the strong current and promptly alerted local authorities and police.

Rescue teams have since recovered one body, believed to be that of a man in his early thirties from Uttar Pradesh, though official identification is still pending. “Search operations are underway to locate the second person,” said Kullu Additional District Magistrate Ashwani Kumar.

The river's sudden surge is suspected to be linked to the release of water from the reservoir of the Parbati-II hydroelectric project earlier in the day. However, officials said a definitive connection can only be confirmed after an investigation.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to determine whether proper warning and alert protocols were followed prior to the water release. The Kullu Sub-Divisional Magistrate has been tasked with submitting a report within a week.
