Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

The Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Monday asserted that the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state would ensure equal rights for all citizens, irrespective of their religion or caste, and bring an end to the oppression of Muslim women.

Speaking at a function at Gandhi Park in Dehradun to mark the completion of three years of his second term as chief minister, Dhami stated that his government was fulfilling the expectations of the people who had re-elected the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for a second consecutive term.

He highlighted that Uttarakhand had made history by becoming the first state in independent India to implement the UCC on January 27. The legislation, he said, was a step towards equality and justice for all, particularly addressing the issues faced by Muslim women.

Alongside the UCC, Dhami also pointed to the enactment of a strict anti-cheating law as a significant achievement of his administration. Under this law, at least 100 individuals linked to the copying mafia had been jailed, and over 20,000 government appointments had been made in a fair and transparent manner.

The chief minister also outlined various development initiatives undertaken by his government. He noted that women in Uttarakhand had been granted a 30 per cent reservation in government jobs, ensuring greater opportunities for them in public service.

He further announced the establishment of a medical college in Rudrapur, which is expected to be operational by 2026, and the construction of an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kichha.

Additionally, he informed the gathering that an international-level airport was being developed in Pantnagar and that the approval of the Jamrani dam project under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance would help resolve water supply issues in the Terai Bhabar region.

Dhami also announced the construction of new bus stations in Khatima and Kichha, while an industrial township covering 1,100 acres would be established in Khurpiya, creating thousands of employment opportunities.

He highlighted that the central government had recently approved the construction of ropeways to Hemkund Sahib and Kedarnath, improving connectivity to these significant pilgrimage sites.

Stressing his government’s commitment to inclusive development, Dhami stated that efforts were being made to ensure the benefits of growth reached the most marginalised sections of society.

He mentioned that nearly eight lakh farmers in Uttarakhand were availing benefits under the Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana and that the government was actively promoting the cultivation of coarse grains while providing free irrigation water to farmers through canals.

In a move aimed at addressing long-standing concerns of the Bengali community living in the Terai region, Dhami announced that the term "East Pakistan" had been removed from their caste certificates. Earlier in the day, Dhami led a roadshow from Galla Mandi to Gandhi Park as part of the celebrations marking three years of his second tenure as chief minister.
