Jharkhand’s textile industry alone exports products worth ₹200 crore annually to the US.

The recent decision by the US government under former President Donald Trump to impose a 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods is beginning to show serious repercussions in Jharkhand.

Exporters in the state are facing a crisis, with American buyers putting on hold export orders worth around ₹110 crore.

According to industry figures, textile exports worth ₹60 crore, lacquer-based products worth ₹20 crore, and fire bricks valued at ₹30 crore are currently stuck.

Exporters also confirm that fresh orders from American markets have come to a halt, raising fears of widespread job losses in the state.

Jharkhand’s textile industry alone exports products worth ₹200 crore annually to the US. “If America charges us 50 per cent tariff while offering just 19 per cent to countries like Bangladesh, we cannot survive in the American market,” said an exporter.

He emphasised the urgent need for supportive central and state policies, including swift implementation of the new textile policy.

Another exporter in the fire bricks industry said orders worth ₹30 crore are pending, putting the livelihoods of nearly 450 workers at risk. “If US buyers do not proceed, we will have to look at alternative markets,” he added.

The lac industry, which exports around ₹70 crore annually, is also under stress. An exporter said that an order worth ₹40 crore has been stalled, directly affecting another 600 workers.

Apparel Manufacturers of Jharkhand said that American buyers themselves are uneasy about the new tariff and may cancel contracts altogether. “If that happens, finding alternatives will take time,” he warned.

Overall, Jharkhand exports goods worth nearly ₹1,120 crore annually to the US. With ₹110 crore already stuck, exporters are urgently exploring other markets to cushion the blow.
