A total of 46 survivors are receiving treatment at the Joshimath Army Hospital following a devastating avalanche near the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) camp at Mana village in Chamoli district on February 28. The Indian Army confirmed on Sunday that the death toll had risen to five.

Brigade GSO 1 Lt Col Devendra stated that 50 people were rescued from the avalanche site, with four initially reported dead. One critically injured worker was airlifted to AIIMS Rishikesh for advanced medical care, while the remaining 45 injured workers are being treated at the Army’s field hospital in Joshimath. The BRO is expected to release the names of the deceased soon.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami provided an update on the ongoing rescue operations, confirming that efforts to locate four missing workers are still underway. Multiple agencies, including the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Indian Air Force (IAF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are actively involved in the search.

Advanced technology such as ground-penetrating radar, thermal imaging cameras, and victim-locating cameras are being used to enhance search efforts. Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari clarified that the initial count of 55 workers had been revised to 54, as one worker who was thought to be missing was on unauthorised leave and safe at home.

On Sunday, an IAF Mi-17 helicopter airlifted a drone-based Intelligent Buried Object Detection System to assist in the search operation. Additionally, IAF Cheetah helicopters have been deployed for rescue efforts in the avalanche-hit Mana area since Saturday.

As per the latest update, out of 54 workers, 51 have been rescued. However, five have lost their lives, and three remain missing as search and rescue operations continue in the region.
