File photo Uttarakhand Assembly cleared the Uniform Civil Cide Bill, 2024, in February last year.

A cabinet meeting was held on Monday at the State Secretariat, chaired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, where the cabinet approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) manual. The manual had been thoroughly reviewed by the legislative department before receiving approval.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami stated that the government had fulfilled its promises made during the 2022 elections. He added that the implementation dates for the UCC will be announced soon.

"We promised the people of Uttarakhand in 2022 that we would bring the UCC Bill as soon as our government was formed. We delivered on that promise. The draft committee prepared it, it was passed, and the President approved it, making it an act. The training process is almost complete, and we will announce the implementation dates after careful consideration," Dhami told reporters after the meeting.

The BJP government introduced the UCC Bill in a special session of the Uttarakhand Legislative Assembly on February 6 this year. It was passed the next day, February 7, with a comfortable majority.

After passing the Assembly, President Droupadi Murmu signed the bill on March 13, paving the way for Uttarakhand to potentially become the first state in India to implement the UCC.

The UCC aims to create a common set of personal laws for all citizens, irrespective of religion, gender, or caste. It will cover areas like marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
