Uttarakhand is all set to host the 38th National Games, and excitement is in the air. The event begins in just 15 days, with 15,613 participants, including 9,728 players—both men and women—coming from all over the country.
Final preparations inderway
The National Games will feature 44 sports events across eight districts, including the state capital, Dehradun, where the majority of competitions will take place.
Events by district
- Dehradun: Hosts 16 sports, including squash, archery, basketball, athletics, and more.
- Haridwar: Will hold hockey, kabaddi, and wrestling.
- Rishikesh: Hosts beach sports like handball and volleyball, as well as slalom events.
- New Tehri: Features kayaking, canoeing, and rowing.
- Udham Singh Nagar: Includes cycling, handball, volleyball, and shooting trap.
- Nainital and Haldwani: Host unique events like cycling MTB, kalaripayattu, swimming, football, and triathlon.
- Almora, Champawat, and Pithoragarh: Each host specific events such as yogasana, rafting, and boxing.
Key Dates
- Arrival of Participants: Athletes and support teams start arriving on January 27.
- Opening Ceremony: January 28 at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Dehradun.
- Closing Ceremony: February 14 at International Sports Complex, Gaulapar, Haldwani.
Player and staff participation
A total of 9,728 players, including 4,940 men and 4,788 women, will compete in the games. Adding technical and support staff, the total participation rises to 15,613.
Here’s a district-wise breakdown of participants:
- Dehradun: 4,444 players (2,223 men, 2,221 women), total 7,123 including staff.
- Haridwar: 840 players, total 1,241 with staff.
- Tehri and New Tehri: Combined 592 players, total 1,286 with staff.
- Udham Singh Nagar: 1,040 players, total 1,643 with staff.
- Nainital and Haldwani: Combined 2,196 players, total 3,586 with staff.
- Other districts (Almora, Champawat, Pithoragarh): 616 players combined, total 1,011 with staff.
This is the first time Uttarakhand is hosting the National Games, marking a historic moment for the state. The grand scale of the event is expected to boost local tourism and showcase the region’s capability to host national-level sports events.
