Security tightened along Indo-Nepal border in Uttarakhand after violent Gen Z-led protests in Nepal.

Security has been tightened along the Indo-Nepal border in Uttarakhand after violent Gen Z-led protests erupted in Nepal, a press release from the CMO said on Tuesday.

The Pithoragarh Police, along with SSB personnel, are carrying out regular patrolling and combing operations along the Kali River and other sensitive areas near border police stations.

The unrest in Nepal grew after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on Tuesday as violent protests entered their second day. His resignation came after four ministers had earlier stepped down, local media reported.

According to reports, at least 19 protesters were killed and hundreds were injured in Kathmandu and nearby towns on Monday. The agitations, led by young people, were against corruption and the government’s decision to impose a social media ban.

On Monday alone, 19 people died and nearly 500 were injured in clashes near the Federal Parliament and other sites in Kathmandu, The Himalayan Times reported.

Although the government lifted the social media ban late Monday night, fresh protests broke out within hours. Demonstrators accused the government of corruption and renewed their agitation.

On Tuesday, violent protesters stormed the western gate of Singha Durbar, Nepal’s central administrative complex that houses several ministries. Witnesses told The Himalayan Times that the crowd forced its way into the heavily guarded premises as protests escalated.

Authorities have already imposed curfews in parts of Kathmandu after Monday’s deadly violence. Protesters also set on fire the ruling party’s offices, PM Oli’s residence in Balkot, and several buildings in Janakpur.

Crowds gathered again near PM Oli’s private home in Balkot, demanding justice for the protesters killed on Monday. The residence was set ablaze during the demonstrations.
