The Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) plans to survey four high-risk glacier lakes in Pithoragarh district this year. This initiative follows last year’s study of the Vasudhara glacial lake in Chamoli district’s Dhauli Ganga Basin.
13 glacier lakes identified
Uttarakhand has identified 13 glacier lakes, categorised based on their sensitivity. Five are classified as highly sensitive (Category A), while others fall under Category B (sensitive) and Category C (less sensitive).
Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman emphasised the importance of developing a robust system for glacier lake monitoring. Collaborative efforts with institutions like the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, and State Disaster Response Force aim to ensure effective surveillance.
Advanced equipment like water level sensors, thermal imagers, and automatic weather stations will be deployed during the surveys.

Phased approach to glacier lake safety
According to USDMA's Anand Swaroop, the initial phase will focus on studying the depth, width, volume, and drainage routes of the lakes. This will be followed by installing early warning systems and scientific instruments to monitor changes in the lakes over time.
Former Wadia Institute scientist DP Dobhal highlighted the need for continuous monitoring and protective measures to minimize risks. Experts also called for studying sediment deposition and sharing research findings among institutions to improve understanding and preparedness.
National collaboration on glacier lake safety
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is overseeing the Glacier Lake Risk Reduction Project to ensure comprehensive studies and timely protective measures. The 13 identified glacier lakes include six in Pithoragarh, four in Chamoli, and one each in Bageshwar, Tehri, and Uttarkashi districts.
This initiative underlines Uttarakhand's commitment to mitigating potential risks from glacier lakes and safeguarding its communities.
