TVK chief Vijay criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre over the repeated arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, demanding a more robust intervention to protect their rights.

Following 38 days of silence in the wake of the Karur stampede tragedy, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay made his first public appearance at the party’s general council meeting on Wednesday.

The meeting, which was attended by senior functionaries and district secretaries, saw the passing of 12 key resolutions addressing a range of issues from women’s safety and law and order to farmers’ losses and environmental concerns. The first resolution, read out by Karur District Secretary Mathiazhagan — who was named in the FIR over the stampede — paid tribute to the victims, describing the Karur incident as "a conspiracy and an unimaginable tragedy."

The party strongly condemned the Coimbatore gang-rape of a woman student, urging the government to ensure the maximum possible punishment for the perpetrators. Accusing the DMK government of "failing in law and order" and "putting women’s safety at risk," TVK challenged whether the Chief Minister would "wake up from his slumber."

In a separate resolution, TVK criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Centre over the repeated arrests of Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy, demanding a more robust intervention to protect their rights. The party also voiced its opposition to the revision of electoral rolls or SIR exercise in Tamil Nadu, citing the "bulk removal of voters" in Bihar and calling it "improper to conduct Special Intensive Revision in haste when a case is pending before the Supreme Court."

TVK slammed the DMK government for the extensive losses incurred by farmers during paddy procurement in the Delta region amidst heavy rains. The party alleged that the government’s "inaction led to a 20 lakh tonne loss" and demanded compensation for the affected farmers. Furthermore, a resolution highlighted the impact of the North-East monsoon on Chennai, stating that it had "exposed incomplete stormwater drains." The party urged the government to accelerate the ₹4,000 crore project on a war footing to prevent future flooding. TVK also opposed the approval for a high-rise construction at the Pallikaranai Ramsar site, arguing that it is an "ecologically sensitive area that must be protected."

A key resolution demanded "adequate security for the party chief and supporters who come to meet him without bias at all campaigns," following concerns raised over crowd management and safety at previous TVK events. Taking on the ruling DMK directly, TVK labelled it a "publicity-driven government" and accused the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam IT wing of "spreading disinformation and defaming the TVK chief."

Finally, TVK demanded a white paper from the state government detailing FDI inflows, investments, and job creation, making a tacit reference to Foxconn's denial of the state’s investment claims.
