The water level at Pong Dam crossed the danger mark on Tuesday afternoon, which may worsen the situation in Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts of Punjab, where the Beas is already in spate.
The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB), which looks after the dam, has already made it clear that it would not allow the water level to go beyond 1,391.13 feet, as recorded at 7 pm on Tuesday, since it might damage the dam’s structure.
The maximum capacity of the dam is 1,410 feet. The authorities have already opened all six floodgates of the dam. The water level at the dam rose rapidly following an increase in the inflow due to heavy rain in the catchment areas of the river. People have started evacuating to safer places in Mukerian subdivision. The water level has been continuously rising along Mahitabpur, Maini, Malahan, Kalota, Naushera Pattan, Taggad Kalan, Mauli and Babupur villages.
The situation has worsened in Tanda subdivision as well, forcing people to move to safer places. Residents of Abdullahpur village have taken shelter in a gurdwara in Ibrahimpur village. The administration has started shifting them to a relief camp at a government school in Miani.
