WB Assembly to table resolution on Pahalgam attack, Op Sindoor

Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday announced that both the matters will be discussed in a two-hour session, in which chief minister Mamata Banerjee may participate.

The announcement comes ahead of the monsoon (Badal) session, which begins on June 9 in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.

A special resolution on the Pahalgam terrorist attack and the Indian Army’s retaliatory strike, ‘Operation Sindoor’, will be introduced in the West Bengal Assembly on Tuesday, June 10, announced Speaker Biman Banerjee on Thursday. The matter will be discussed in a two-hour session, with chief minister Mamata Banerjee expected to participate.

The announcement comes ahead of the monsoon (Badal) session, which begins on June 9. The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) had previously hinted at bringing up the issue in the Assembly. On Thursday, the Speaker confirmed the date for the resolution, emphasising its significance amid heightened national sentiment following the India-Pakistan tensions.

Across the state, both the TMC and BJP have been actively organising programs in support of the armed forces. While the Bharatiya Janata Party has led ‘Tiranga Yatras’, the TMC has also been vocal in lauding the military’s operation. Although both parties are united in their appreciation of the army’s actions, certain Trinamool leaders have questioned the security lapses at Pahelgaon and criticised the Centre’s role in the lead-up to the attack.

In this politically charged backdrop, the special resolution is being seen as a move to assert the state’s position while reflecting public sentiment.

An all-party meeting was held on Thursday, but apart from ISF MLA Naushad Siddiqui, no other opposition MLA was in attendance—raising concerns about the level of participation from opposition benches in the upcoming session. Despite this, Speaker Banerjee expressed optimism.

“I hope everyone will cooperate to ensure this crucial session proceeds peacefully,” he said, adding, “Parliamentary democracy thrives on debates and discussions. If there's no heat, it weakens the system.”

Apart from the Pahelgaon resolution, the BJP is pushing for a separate discussion on the recent violence in Murshidabad, alleging law and order failures in certain pockets of the district. Speaker Banerjee responded by saying, “Everyone has the right to raise issues. Whatever is legally permissible, I will allow.”

Two other significant resolutions—one on the erosion of the Ganges and the other on the drinking water crisis—are also scheduled. Several key bills are likely to be introduced during this two-week-long session.

With national security, local governance, and public welfare all on the agenda, the Assembly floor is expected to witness an intense and closely watched session.
