Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday warned that any attempt to weaken the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would create "innumerable obstacles" in India’s path toward becoming a global superpower.
Speaking at an event in Guwahati to mark the BJP’s 46th foundation day, Sarma highlighted the party’s pivotal role in India’s growth and governance.
“Undermining the BJP is not about targeting individuals, it is about weakening a powerful ideology rooted in national pride, unity, and progress,” Sarma told party workers, urging them to renew their commitment to India’s advancement on the world stage.
He declared that the BJP would continue to serve the nation “as long as the sun and moon exist,” reaffirming his faith in the party’s long-term vision and grassroots strength. Sarma also cautioned against attempts to discredit the BJP, particularly through misinformation campaigns on social media, and called on party cadres to counter false narratives with facts and positive outreach.
Addressing the crowd, Sarma described the construction of the Ram temple in Ayodhya as a historic milestone symbolising India's triumph over “500 years of slavery” and more than just a religious achievement. He credited the BJP’s strong leadership for ushering in major national reforms and legislative accomplishments.
“Without the BJP, transformative moves like the abrogation of Article 370, the outlawing of triple talaq, and the passage of the Waqf Bill would not have been possible,” he said.
The CM further emphasised the BJP’s contributions to Assam’s development, from autonomous councils to local municipal and panchayat bodies. He asserted that the party has played a crucial role in preserving and promoting Assamese identity and cultural pride.
Earlier in the day, Sarma and Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia hoisted the party flag at the state headquarters, joined by senior leaders and grassroots workers. In his address, Sarma paid tribute to the dedication of party workers and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, under which the BJP has become a platform to realise the dreams of every segment of Indian society.
Claiming that the BJP now surpasses the Communist Party of China in membership strength, Sarma also took a dig at the Congress party, saying, “Unlike the Congress, which became a family-run outfit under Nehru and Indira Gandhi, the BJP remains a cadre-based, people-centric party free from dynastic politics.”
