The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Asha, a native resident of the nearby Hulimavu area in south Bengaluru.

A woman found dead in a BBMP garbage truck in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The Bengaluru police arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the killing of a woman whose body was discovered dumped inside a garbage truck in the early hours of Sunday. The accused, Shamsuddin from Assam, was the woman's live-in boyfriend and was arrested within 20 hours of the discovery of the body, according to the police.

According to South Division DCP Lokesh B Jagalasar, the body was found around 2 am in the ST Bed Layout area (in southern Bengaluru’s Koramangala), following a complaint from local residents. “A case of murder was immediately registered,” he said.

The deceased has been identified as 40-year-old Asha, a native resident of the nearby Hulimavu area in south Bengaluru. Asha was a widow and had reportedly been in a relationship with Shamsuddin for over a year and a half. The two had moved in together four months ago and were posing as a married couple. Both were employed at the same housekeeping materials company near Hulimavu, where they first met.

The couple's relationship had reportedly been tumultuous in the past few days with constant arguments, police sources say. Asha was said to be having problems with drink, which became the focal point of the disputes as she also made numerous late-night calls.

On the evening of the murder, Shamsuddin is suspected to have come home intoxicated. There was a scuffle, and in anger, he is said to have strangled her to death.

Police said Shamsuddin then stuffed the body into a bag, transported it on his bike for nearly 20 km, and dumped it into a BBMP garbage vehicle near a popular skating arena of the area, before fleeing.

The body was reportedly found in the rear lift of the truck, with the legs tied to the neck. Initial reports had suggested the woman was between 25 and 30 years old and may have been sexually assaulted. She was found wearing a private company T-shirt and pants, but no undergarments.

Conclusive identification of the accused happened through CCTV footage from the residence and surrounding roads. It was during that time investigators caught up with the bike that appeared in the footage, and that happened to take it to Shamsuddin. He has been taken into custody and is being grilled.

Shamsuddin originally hails from Assam and reportedly is married with children there.

Police said that further investigation is on.
