As many as 52 lakh women in Punjab will receive monthly financial assistance of Rs 1,000, while Dalit women will be provided Rs 1,500 per month, under the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dhiyan Satkar Yojana starting July 1, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced on Tuesday. Cards have already been issued to around 35 lakh beneficiaries under the scheme.

The announcement came on the sidelines of a press conference convened to highlight the extension of the Kisan Credit Card (KCC) scheme to vegetable and fruit growers as well as pisciculturists, aimed at promoting diversification in the agriculture sector.

Mann said the state government has already made adequate budgetary provisions to ensure smooth implementation of the financial assistance programme. He emphasised that it is a long-term welfare initiative aimed at strengthening the economic condition of women in the state and cautioned against misinformation suggesting otherwise.

Responding to questions on the lookout circular issued against Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia, Mann said Punjab Police was actively searching for him and expressed confidence that he would be arrested soon. “He is a paper tiger. He involved his own men in a police case and then fled, abandoning them,” Mann alleged.

In a separate announcement, Mann, who also holds the Cooperation portfolio, outlined key reforms to the 26-year-old Kisan Credit Card scheme, stating that the government is moving toward complete digitisation of the system.

He said the credit limit for wheat cultivation has been raised from Rs 24,380 per acre to Rs 30,000 per acre. For the first time, a separate allocation of Rs 2,000 per acre has been introduced under the KCC for crop residue management, aimed at supporting efforts to curb stubble burning.
