Heavy rains in Uttarkashi have blocked the Yamunotri and Gangotri National Highways. Debris and fallen trees covered stretches of the road, the police said on Saturday.
Work to clear the debris is underway and traffic has been stopped at safe points. Fire services and NHIDCL teams are working to clear the routes. On Yamunotri highway, a tree fell near Gyanoti, while in Dharasu, stones and mud blocked the Gangotri road.
"The Gangotri National Highway has been obstructed near Dharasu (old police station) due to stones and debris falling on the road. Work is underway to clear the route," the police posted on X.
In Syanachatti of Uttarkashi district, a bridge submerged due to rising Yamuna water is now close to being restored.
Meanwhile, rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi are flowing above the danger mark. Officials have warned people living along the banks to stay alert. Videos shared by the state’s information department showed the river flowing dangerously close to homes.
In Chamoli, a cloudburst caused heavy damage. Several houses and shops were filled with mud and debris. One person has died. The Army quickly sent 50 soldiers from Rudraprayag to help in rescue and relief.
District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari is closely monitoring the situation at the site. NDRF, SDRF, police and local officials are all involved in clearing roads and helping affected families.
