A 25-year-old postgraduate student from Haryana has come under the scanner for suspected links with Pakistani intelligence operatives, a senior police official confirmed on Friday.
The accused, Devender Singh, hailing from the Guhla area of Kaithal district, was initially arrested after an FIR was lodged against him last Sunday for sharing photographs of himself with weapons on social media, according to Superintendent of Police (SP) Astha Modi.
During the investigation, it emerged that Singh, a Master’s student in political science at a Punjab college, had travelled to Pakistan on a pilgrimage in November last year. While there, he allegedly established contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives and continued communicating with them after returning to India, the SP said.
“We have seized his mobile phone and sent it for forensic examination,” said SP Modi.
When asked about any potential security breaches, she stated, “He has admitted to taking photographs of the Patiala cantonment from outside and sharing them.” The authorities are now conducting a financial audit and scrutinising Singh’s bank records. A second FIR has been registered in light of these developments.
This case follows closely on the heels of another incident in Panipat, where 24-year-old Nauman Ilahi was arrested for allegedly passing sensitive information to contacts in Pakistan.
