The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee has acknowledged a cloud storage configuration issue on the JEE (Advanced) 2026 results portal after a teenager identifying as a cybersecurity researcher claimed that personal and examination-related details of lakhs of candidates were accessible without authorisation.

The issue was flagged by 16-year-old Rylen Anil, who posted on X that the public cloud storage endpoint linked to the JEE (Advanced) results infrastructure

could be accessed without authentication, potentially exposing candidate data.

According to Anil, approximately 1.79 lakh result records and 1.87 lakh admit card PDFs were accessible, including personal information such as candidates' names, dates of birth and mobile phone numbers.

“JEE Advanced 2026 candidate/result infrastructure had a public cloud storage misconfiguration exposing bulk candidate data without auth,” he wrote on X.

Responding to the claim, IIT-Roorkee on Tuesday night confirmed the existence of a configuration issue and said corrective action was being taken on priority.

“Thank you for pointing out the configuration issue in the cloud storage device. The same is being plugged on priority. The data stored was read-only and so there was no possibility of any alteration. We applaud your responsible and ethical behaviour,” the institute said in a statement on X.

The institute maintained that while the data may have been accessible due to the configuration issue, it was stored in a read-only format, preventing any modification or tampering of records.

The development comes amid growing scrutiny of digital infrastructure used for major national examinations. In recent months, examinations and admission-related systems linked to CUET-UG, NEET-UG and CBSE processes have faced complaints ranging from technical glitches and server disruptions to issues in application, evaluation and result-processing systems.

The JEE (Advanced) examination serves as the gateway to undergraduate programmes at the Indian Institutes of Technology and several other premier engineering institutions.

Results for JEE (Advanced) 2026 were declared on June 1. A total of 56,880 candidates qualified for admission, including 10,107 female and 46,773 male candidates.

Overall, 1,79,694 candidates appeared in both papers of the examination held on May 17, out of 1,87,389 registered candidates.
