The Assam government has announced the operationalisation of 10 new co-districts from 15 August 2025, as part of its ongoing administrative reforms aimed at enhancing efficiency and public service delivery. The move will take the total number of co-districts in the state to 49.
The announcement was made through a government notification (No. 375037/496), issued under the directive of the Governor of Assam, highlighting the state’s efforts to decentralise governance and streamline administration in its diverse and expansive regions.
The official notification stated, “It is announced in the interest of public service, that as directed by the honourable Governor of Assam, there will be another 10 co-districts to be functional from 15th August in addition to the 39 already functional co-districts through notification number 458512/76, dated 28/9/2024.”
The co-district system, introduced last year, was designed to improve coordination across various departments and facilitate quicker administrative responses, reflecting the government’s commitment to better governance and service delivery.
This initiative is expected to bolster local governance, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and enhance government outreach to remote and underserved areas.

The 10 new co-districts will complement the existing 39 co-districts, further decentralising administration and ensuring more effective governance.
As of May 2025, Assam comprises 35 administrative districts. This number was reinstated following the Assam Cabinet's decision on August 25, 2023, to recreate four districts—Biswanath, Hojai, Bajali, and Tamulpur—that had been merged with other districts in December 2022.
This move restored the total count to 35 districts. The districts are organised into five regional divisions: Barak Valley, Central Assam, Lower Assam, North Assam, and Upper Assam.
The current list of districts includes Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Charaideo, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Dima Hasao, Goalpara, Golaghat, Hailakandi, Hojai, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup Metropolitan, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj (now renamed Sribhumi), Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara-Mankachar, Tamulpur, Tinsukia, Udalguri, West Karbi Anglong, Bajali, and Biswanath.
These districts are crucial in the administrative structure of Assam, with each district managed by a District Commissioner and subdivided into sub-divisions and blocks to ensure better local governance and efficient public service delivery.
Let's break it down for more clarity:
Administrative districts
Assam currently has 35 administrative districts. This figure was reinstated following the Assam Cabinet's decision on August 25, 2023, to recreate four districts—Biswanath, Hojai, Bajali, and Tamulpur—that had been merged with other districts in December 2022. This move restored the total count to 35 districts.
Co-districts (sub-districts)
In addition to the 35 administrative districts, Assam has established 39 co-districts. These are smaller administrative units aimed at enhancing governance and service delivery.
The state plans to increase this number to 78 co-districts, with 10 new co-districts set to become operational on August 15, 2025. This will bring the total number of co-districts to 49.
